How to research a company before an interview
Got an interview? Get to know the company first.
You’ve read the job description and prepared your examples. But how much do you know about the company you’re hoping to join?
A little research can help you give more relevant answers, ask thoughtful questions and decide whether the opportunity is right for you.
Here’s where to start:
Go beyond the home page
Explore what the company does, who its customers are and what it says about its values. What interests you about its work?
Check the LinkedIn page
Recent posts can give you a feel for its projects, people and priorities. Look for something you could naturally discuss in the interview.
Look for recent news
Has the business expanded, launched a service or won an award? Make sure anything you mention is current and from a reliable source.
Know who you’re meeting
If you have your interviewers’ names, have a look at their professional profiles on the company website and LinkedIn to understand their roles.
Turn your research into questions
For example: “I noticed you’ve recently expanded your services. How will this role support that growth?”
You don’t need to memorise the company’s history. Aim to understand the business and connect what you’ve learned with the contribution you could make.
Before your next interview, find three things that interest you about the company - and prepare two questions you’d like to ask.
