What hiring managers really look for
When you apply for a job, it’s easy to wonder what will make you stand out. More experience? A polished CV? The perfect interview answer?
The priorities will vary with the role, but hiring managers are usually looking for evidence that you can do the work, contribute to the team and understand what you’re signing up for.
Here’s how to help them see that.
A clear connection between your experience and the role
Make your relevant skills easy to find. Read the job advertisement carefully, then highlight the experience that matches what they need. This is where a cover letter is important - it gives you the opportunity to connect your experience to the role and explain why you’re interested. If you’re changing careers, use it to show how your skills transfer.
Examples that back up what you say
“Great communicator” or “strong problem-solver” means more when you can give an example. Think about a time you resolved an issue, improved a process or helped someone achieve a result. What did you do, and what difference did it make?
An understanding of the opportunity
Be ready to explain what interests you about the work and the organisation. You don’t need to know everything, but some research and thoughtful questions show you’ve given the opportunity serious consideration.
Reliability and a constructive approach
How you communicate throughout the process helps build confidence in you. Respond promptly, arrive prepared and follow through on what you’ve agreed to do. In interviews, explain how you handle challenges, work with others and ask for help when you need it.
Self-awareness and a willingness to learn
You don’t need a ready-made answer to every situation. Be honest about what you know, where you’re still developing and how you approach learning. An example of taking feedback on board can say a lot.
Before your next application or interview, ask yourself:
What are the three most important things this employer needs, and what examples can I share to show I can deliver them?
You don’t have to present a flawless version of yourself. Help the hiring manager understand what you bring, how you work and why the opportunity makes sense for you.
